| History/Biographical |
These are the papers of Duncan Edwin (D.E.) MacKenzie (1869 - 1944) who was New Westminster Market Clerk (1904-1920); Manager and Secretary of the Royal Agricultural and Industrial Society (1911-1941), Secretary of the New Westminster May Day Committee (1911-1942) as well as member of numerous other fraternal clubs and local community organizations. Born in Kincarardine, Bruce County, Ontario in 1869 D.E. MacKenzie moved to B.C. in 1883 settling in Cloverdale with his parents. In 1890 he was a book keeper for J.H. Todd and Sons Cannery and in 1891 managed the Johnston and MacKenzie grocery in New Westminster. From 1898 to 1903 he was owner and partner with his brother F.J. Mackenzie (later pharmacist and M.L.A.) of a grocery store on Columbia Street that was destroyed by the Great Fire of 1898 and rebuilt at a new site. From 1903 to 1920 Mr. Mackenzie was Clerk of the City Market, later becoming Weigh Master. He was Secretary and Treasurer of the Westminster Creamery. In 1906 he was confirmed as a member of the International Order of Oddfellows and would later have a hand in the building and management of the new Masonic temple (Agnes Street). From 1911 to 1941 he acted as Secretary to the R.A. and I.S. and manager of the Provincial Exhibition from 1911-1929. From 1911 to 1944 Mr. Mackenzie was secretary/honorary secretary to the New Westminster May Day Committee, a seat later held by his son and then daughter. D.E. was also active in Conservative politics in both Vancouver and New Westminster, member of the peace portal Park committee, and involved with the Kiwanis Club, Sons of Scotland, Westminster Club, New Westminster Board of Trade, Fraternal Order of Eagles, and the Native Sons of B.C. Post No. 4. He had two children, Duncan and Margaret (Maisy). |
| Custodial History |
The fonds was donated in 1983 by daughter Miss (Margaret) Maisy MacKenzie. For many years the collection was stored at the New Westminster Public Library and was transferred to the New Westminster Archives at an unknown time. A preliminary description was completed by Jim Wolf in 1989. Several items (minutes and financial files from the R.A. and I.S Exhibition) were not found when this document was compiled in 2003 and may yet be found. |

The fonds consists of records relating to MacKenzie's activities in fraternal organizations, as well as his personal business papers, and his work as May Day Committee secretary and Manager of the Royal Agricultural and Industrial Society annual exhibition. The fonds contains the following series: Personal papers, Financial papers, Memberships, May Day Committee, and Royal Agricultural and Industrial Society. |
